In the design industry, we all think about what we can take from it and how it can build our careers. But we rarely ask ourselves what we can give back to this industry that provides us with so many opportunities. My guest today decided what he was willing to give in return for the amazing success he’s had.

Besides always showing gratitude for the industry, it’s about being committed to being undeniable; to knowing exactly what makes you unique and leaning into it. If you’re a perfectionist like me, you might overthink this. But as my guest today says, winners go with what they have and losers wait on perfection.

I have a fabulous conversation to share with y’all today. I’m talking with Michel Smith Boyd, an incredible interior designer, painter, product designer, and TV personality on Bravo’s Buying It Blind. Michel is a fellow Louisianian who claims his biggest asset and most unique thing about him is his point of view. We’re talking about his story of becoming a mega-successful designer, being Black in this industry, and why he says he is the king of self-pep talks.

What You’ll Learn from this Episode:

  • Why embracing where you’re from makes you multi-dimensional.
  • What it was like for Michel to be Black in the design industry.
  • Why Michel always wants to be undeniable.
  • The emotional roller coaster design students experience.
  • How Michel describes himself as an extrovert for hire.
  • Why your most valuable asset is your point of view.
