A few weeks ago, we shared part 1 of a special client’s home redesign, beginning with their keeping room.
Today, I’m happy to invite you into this beautifully transformed home again to show you the dining room!
As an introvert, I love rooms that can be separate and quiet from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house. I also love spaces that set the stage for deep conversations with your favorite people – giving you the opportunity to experience the social rest we all need.
The dining room definitely fits the bill for both of these!
Let’s take a look at the before:
The dining room after the chandelier was replaced but before the furniture was installed.
You can see in the before that the dining room wasn’t in terrible shape. We’d already replaced the chandelier by the time this pic was taken, and it made a huge difference in the space.
Our clients’ main request was that we keep their existing table, but replace the chairs and help give this room a fresher feel. I noticed that the artwork was great, but too small-scale for the wall it was on. We relocated this piece to the foyer, which is open to the dining room, and found a beautiful new painting by artist Cynthia Knapp that was not only a better size for the space, but helped reinforce the new color palette we would be introducing through textiles.

Custom drapes that mimic the color of the new chair upholstery are banded with a wide, embroidered tape. The rug was repurposed from the keeping room, as its color palette was perfect for the newly re-designed dining room. We also recommended painting the walls to bring in a crisper tone of white. The former cream wasn’t bad, but we knew that the new color palette needed a cleaner backdrop to really feel modern with the more traditional style of furnishings.

In the foyer, open to the dining room, we placed the butterfly artwork and layered it with our client’s existing sideboard, lamp, and smaller piece of artwork. We added new ginger jars to tie the rooms together by color.

The new chairs are still very traditional in style, but are much more substantial in size, helping our clients’ family of very tall kids and parents feel comfortable at the table. We added a luxurious, embroidered fabric on the back of the chair backs, while the seats are covered in a high performing mohair. I love how they look with their cherished dining table!
This amazing client’s dining room was such a joy to design. We know its timeless style will be the setting for family dinners, holidays, and intimate chats for years to come.
